Chiang Mai University is killing the Thais or helping the Thais ?
If you look at the website of the language institute, you will find its great policy is helping the Kingdom to produce the great quality of people:
But, on the other hand if you look at the TEFL certification, it is disgusted to know how much they charge the fee:
Of course they are helping the so called native speakers to find a job in Thailand that command a 35k a month, for a Thai teacher would have to work for 25 years to get that amount, if lucky enough to be promoted to Ajarn 2 and above.
Even CMU cannot pay higher than 20k for a PH D.
Anyone knows http://www.teflasia.com will see the disgusting words of NATIVE SPEAKER ONLY, below is an example:
Therefore, my question is with that high amount of fees charged by CMU, how many Thais are able to do the TEFL course. If they cannot go to Singapore to do the prestige course, may i correct CMU brochures that CLT is long being established in Asia perhaps not in Thailand. Many Thai teachers were trained by RELC, Singapore and they knew well of it long time ago besides the Thai TESOL, which is pushing for the change of teaching methodology.
If CMU is really helping the people of the kingdom, they should tell the government of education or immigration , which ever stated only 5 countries passport holders are allowed to work, to change the rules that only highly qualified teachers are allowed to teach in the schools of the Kingdom.
Many parents are cheated of the money by the school management by hiring the backpakers to teach English in the school. In Thailand, it is almost white=English. Many schools have Italians, French, Germans etc to teach and the parents think that they are from the native speaking countries. Are we still going by this rule native speaker = to the passport ? Only Bristish Council Language Center would prefer their Brtish nationals, that i have no grieves about it. However, if you look carefully and from the inside story that BCLC would not take a British national to teach if the colour of the skin is not white.
As an established university which has linked to world of 26 nations, it should have the strong voice in the government to change the system that all students entering the university should pass the English language test, perhaps, modelled after the O level paper. Thus, at least, one section of it is much better and to the least those with M 3 would be able to communicate well, unlike now that even Porfessors in the English Deaprt in Rajabaht University, the teacher training university, could not speak fluent English.
Besides, teachers of English of Thai national who cannot speak fluent English should not allowed to teach in the primary or secondary schools. Besides, the English langauge teacher of Thai national should be paid higher so that it can motivate the teacher to perform better.
I like the Chinese new system that ordering the main core of staff of all department to master 300 sentences in order to maintain the post. This is a little cruel though however, it speed up the learning process. Beijingers are encouraged to learn the 300 phrases and in few years time, Chinese in China will be commanding better English than Thais.
It is nothing agianst CMU that i write this entry but feeling sad that a good univerity does not play the role of helping people but rather putting high pressures on the people.
For example, the native speaker pays the 48k for the fee and in return, just within two months , this native speaker can get back the money invested but the Thais English language teachers, due to bad management in the Rajabaht University, will never have the chance to better themselves needless to say, as what the CMU says, can travel the world.
If CMU can profess that its TEFL course is the world class, with that few staff in the faculty, what about the RELC, the ASEAN government backed institution, would be placed ?
May i suggest CMu to conduct a research how many schools that employ the native speakers, the standard of the language is raised. And the Hong Kong experince should be a signal to Thailand.

The modern days, we can use many modes of teaching instead of having a native speaker in the class room. Does Bush made mistkes in his speeches ? He is a native speaker.

If English has the different varities why not the Thai way of varities but with the correct grammar.American English can rape the world because the country rape the land of other people as it is the same as the British English.
May i end this entry with the evidence how the native speakers are enjoying their life in Thailand but the poor Thais plights are not being heard.
Thinking of short term of interest is a foolish act which will damage more as we have seen from many examples from environmnetal to economy.
Let us work for a better Thailand and a better ASEAN.
Perhaps, we should consider learning Esperanto, truely the world language.
It is the policy of the Language Institute, CMU that by
offering the highest quality teaching to its students and staff
and the wider community in developing their foreign
language fluency, learning abilities,and overall
communicative skills, that they may further their
studies, careers, and enhance themselvesculturally, for the
betterment of the Kingdom of Thailand.
But, on the other hand if you look at the TEFL certification, it is disgusted to know how much they charge the fee:
Costs

university qualified teachers and instructors. However, you will find that our tuition costs are competitive and reasonable. We invite you to compare our tuition costs.

Of course they are helping the so called native speakers to find a job in Thailand that command a 35k a month, for a Thai teacher would have to work for 25 years to get that amount, if lucky enough to be promoted to Ajarn 2 and above.

1 Comments:
I am familior with several Thai nationals who have studied in the United States and have graduated with honors in graduate studies. However, when they desire to return to Thailand and contribute some of the knowledge they have obtained abroad, the pay scale pitifully low. There is no way for them to make a decent living. What is reason to have the foreigners make such good salaries when these salaries are not available for nationals who have the same qualifications. Why educate Thais by these foreigners when there will be no jobs available for them anyway?
